SculptureCenter in Queens, free for everyone

If you want to understand how deep the Long Island City art scene goes, you need to walk past the glass condo towers and find a cobblestone alley called Purves Street. Tucked away there is the SculptureCenter, a non-collecting contemporary art museum housed inside an incredibly rugged, renovated 1900s trolley repair shop.

I went about a month ago, right before they wrapped up an absolute fever dream of an exhibition: Pat Oleszko: Fool Disclosure.

Walking into the space back then was spectacular and deeply weird. Oleszko’s work is built around these massive, monumental, airy inflatables and elaborate costumes that completely took over the main exhibit space.

Of course, because the SculptureCenter doesn't have a permanent collection, they are always cycling through new ground-breaking works. That exact exhibition closed at the end of April, and they are currently running entirely new shows, including Akinsanya Kambon: Soul Sessions and Ellen Pau: She Moves.

The building itself is easily a spectacle on its own. They kept the industrial bones intact, gargantuan steel beams, exposed brick, and a gravel outdoor courtyard. Admission is completely free for everyone, every day they are open.
