The Met Cloisters is a total mood when it rains. Because it’s built from pieces of actual medieval abbeys, the gray weather makes the whole place feel more authentic, like you’ve been dropped into a misty European forest instead of upper Manhattan.
I took the A train up to 190th, and even the walk through Fort Tryon Park in the rain was beautiful, super quiet and the gardens have this really deep green look when they’re damp. I used my Culture Pass to get in this time, which is such a great hack for New Yorkers to see these spots for free.
I pretty much saw everything they have on right now. I spent a long time in the room with the Unicorn Tapestries; they’re so detailed and the dim lighting in there really fit the rainy-day vibe. I also hit the Treasury to check out all the small gold and ivory pieces, which is basically a collection of medieval luxury.
Since it was coming down pretty hard, the outdoor courtyards looked beautiful. But just looking through the glass at the rain hitting the plants in the Cuxa Cloister was honestly surreal. The whole place is a mix of indoor and outdoor spaces, so you get these great views of the Hudson River while staying completely dry. If you want a trip that feels like a total escape from the city, this is definitely it.
